In each across clue the wordplay indicates the answer plus an extra letter that is not entered in the grid. In clue order, these letters give an informal definition of a thematic word. Solvers should highlight in the grid four alternative definitions of this word (all of which are single words, none consisting entirely of a single clue answer), to form symbolic representations of the informal definition. Solvers must add five extra blocks to the grid. For down entries these blocks separate the two answers to each of five down clues, which are really two clues side-by-side (in either order). In across entries the extra blocks contain multiple letters of answers which would not otherwise fit. In each of the corresponding across clues one letter from the block's contents is omitted from the wordplay: these letters can be arranged to give the name of the protagonist. Solvers should mark the extra blocks in the grid using an appropriate symbol. Numbers in brackets are the total lengths of their clue answers; individual answers consisting of more than one word are indicated.
